Legal & Operational Identity
The current Terms identify Butterfly Effect Pte. Ltd. as the contracting company. The Privacy Policy describes a Singapore-incorporated company and distinguishes its controller responsibilities from processing for customer-controlled workspaces. [S3][S4]
Manus says Meta acquired it on 2025-12-29 and that it would return to independent operation. SCMP reported on 2026-08-12 that Meta was set to unwind the reported US$2 billion deal after Beijing blocked it. [S1][S2]
These sources document an announced transition, not independently verified completion or the current ownership register. A buyer should confirm the entity, controlling parties and contractual continuity directly before signing.
Technical Architecture
The assessed surface is an autonomous agent that consumes external content and executes code in a sandbox. Salt Labs demonstrated an untrusted-email path reaching code execution and connected-service tokens. [S6]
This is a documented historical capability, not a comprehensive current architecture inventory. We did not operate Manus, enumerate present connectors or inspect sandbox isolation. The threat model concerns a buyer giving the agent business data and integration authority.
The important boundary is between content the agent reads and actions it may take. Restricted integration accounts, out-of-band approvals and recovery outside agent write access should remain controls even after a specific injection flaw is fixed.
Security — Six Dimensions
The fixed D1–D6 grid below assesses enterprise deployment materiality. HIGH describes exposure in the stated configuration; it is not a claim that a current exploit exists.
D1 Client Data Security
Threat model: business records, projects and generated assets reside with a vendor whose legal or ownership transition changes retention. The risk is loss of availability or recoverability, separate from unauthorized disclosure.
The 2026-08-11 notice says data generated by certain users on or after 2025-12-29 would be deleted from 08:00 on 2026-08-23 through 2026-08-24, Singapore time. [S1]
Affected users could back up until 07:59 on 2026-08-23 and begin restoring at 08:00 on 2026-08-25. The notice attributes deletion to regulatory requirements in specific jurisdictions during separation, not a security incident. [S1]
The stated notice-to-deadline interval was approximately 12 days. The notice does not name the affected jurisdictions, account count or full scope of “data generated.” We do not infer a specific regulator order or successful completion. [S1]
In-app and email notifications were promised. Apple ID and Facebook registrants were directed to in-app notices because Manus did not hold their email addresses. Notification delivery and readership were not independently verified. [S1]
Retention is not one rule. The current Privacy Policy describes removal within 30 days, subject to longer legal retention and permitted de-identified model-improvement use. Browser sandbox data lasts up to seven days on free plans and 21 on paid plans. [S3]
Those sandbox limits do not establish retention for every hosted project or database. The separation note says data is stored in the US and Singapore; it does not give a buyer a selectable residency commitment. [S1][S3]
Training requires a scoped answer. Terms restrict third-party general model training unless disclosed with legally required consent. Privacy contains a permitted model-improvement carve-out. Neither proves unconditional no-training treatment for all data. [S3][S4]
Customer-controlled Spaces, API and Team data have processor distinctions. We did not review the linked DPA. Obtain the applicable instructions, deletion schedule and transfer safeguards rather than treating an individual-account policy as an enterprise contract. [S3][S4]
For business-critical data held only in Manus. Independent, tested backups and contractually defined retention are approval-blocking conditions.
D2 Prompt Injection & Tool-Control Exposure
Threat model: third-party email or other external content enters an agent context that can invoke tools. An attacker-controlled instruction crosses from content into execution without the account holder approving the resulting action.
Dark Reading published coverage on 2026-09-24; Salt Labs published its original research on 2026-10-01. They describe obfuscated email instructions leading to sandbox code execution in a controlled proof of concept. [S5][S6]
The reported flaw is resolved. Salt explicitly says it is no longer exploitable. Dark Reading reports Meta triaged, confirmed and patched it after Manus did not reply to the researchers. This is attributed reporting, not a reviewed Meta statement. [S5][S6]
We found no verified 2025 discovery date in these sources. We therefore use publication dates, not a “2025 incident” label. The research is not evidence of an exploited customer breach or continuing exploitability.
The remediation deserves credit. The remaining buyer question is its boundary: which current connectors, content paths and execution permissions are covered by regression testing? We did not obtain independent evidence of that broader coverage.
An anonymous April post alleges deletion of real business data during an agent cleanup. It is unverified and archived as moderator-removed. It does not establish an additional confirmed tool-control incident. [S8]
For an agent permitted to execute production writes without external approval. The resolved research is historical evidence of the failure class, not proof of a current exploitable flaw.
D3 Credentials & API-Key Security
Threat model: a connected account gives the agent access to tokens with permissions beyond a single task. Code execution inside that environment can turn a content-level mistake into account-level compromise.
Salt's controlled demonstration exposed connected-service credentials or tokens through environment variables after reaching code execution. That exposure is part of the resolved research chain, not independently observed current credential handling. [S6]
A sandbox can separate users while still leaving an individual user's secrets readable to code within it. The relevant procurement test is whether current credentials remain outside agent-executed code, and whether scopes, expiry and revocation constrain misuse.
We did not inspect present token storage, rotate a credential or test connector scopes. Require dedicated accounts and least privilege; confirm revocation and logs with a benign authorized test before connecting production services.
For broad production credentials reachable by agent-executed code. Current isolation must be verified; do not generalize the historical token exposure to every present connector.
D4 Payment & Financial-Operation Security
Threat model: agent usage consumes paid credits, or connected permissions permit actions affecting money. These are separate exposures: vendor billing does not itself demonstrate autonomous transfer authority.
The Terms authorize invoicing fees without additional notice or consent. Subscriptions renew at then-current pricing unless cancelled. Credit requirements may change with or without prior notice; unused credits may be forfeited on termination. [S4]
Refund language contains applicable-law exceptions and stated consumer withdrawal rights. We do not characterize payments as universally non-refundable. Variable credit consumption still needs an accountable budget owner and spending limits. [S4]
We did not establish a current payment-write integration, transaction approval mechanism or refund permission model. Do not grant financial write authority on the strength of this public assessment; require a separately documented and tested control.
Assessed for credit spending and undocumented financial authority. No unauthorized payment or confirmed autonomous money movement is established by this record.
D5 Operational Continuity
Threat model: the service remains available but regulatory separation makes existing work unavailable. Conventional uptime percentages would not answer whether a project survives that transition.
The acquisition and planned unwind put controlling-party change inside the continuity threat model. The official response offered user-managed backup and later restoration, not a publicly evidenced guarantee of server-side recovery for every affected account. [S1][S2]
The Terms say the company may provide export tools. That is not a promise of complete portable backups or exit assistance. Without-cause termination requires notice but specifies no duration; some suspension and termination rights allow no prior notice. [S4]
An anonymous September post alleges lost projects and failed recovery after the separation process. We could not verify the account, archive completeness, backups or vendor response. The official schedule and the allegation address different questions: planned process versus claimed outcome. [S1][S7]
We did not obtain a tested recovery-time commitment or comprehensive restoration outcome record. A buyer should retain independently restorable code, data and configuration, and run a recovery drill without relying on the agent's own description.
For Manus as the sole system of record or sole recovery path. The official transition notice is sufficient to require exit planning; anonymous allegations do not determine this level.
D6 Legal & Liability Security
Threat model: records become unavailable, credentials are exposed or an autonomous action causes a business loss. The contract decides how much of that loss remains with the client.
Terms §11 cap aggregate company and affiliate liability at amounts actually paid in the three months preceding the event. They exclude specified consequential losses and loss, damage or interruption of data, to the fullest extent permitted by law. [S4]
The wording includes exceptions for specified negligence-related death or personal injury and fraud. Applicability and enforceability depend on law. We are describing the text, not ruling that every buyer lacks a legal remedy. [S4]
Terms §7 say the company may delete stored content on termination. Ownership of content is not a storage guarantee: the company disclaims ownership while separately retaining deletion and service-change rights. [S4]
Singapore law and SIAC arbitration are the general route, with mandatory-law qualifications, preserved UK/EU consumer rights and a separate US arbitration regime. A buyer must establish its applicable route rather than assuming one global forum. [S4]
For losses materially exceeding three months of fees. Negotiate data-loss, continuity and exit protections; legal counsel should assess the applicable exceptions and dispute route.
Performance & Traction
This assessment does not rely on revenue, fundraising, valuation or adoption claims. A reported US$2 billion transaction establishes commercial materiality, not verified current traction, solvency or enterprise control quality. [S2]
No benchmarks, audited accounts, client references or production performance tests were reviewed. A pilot should measure task quality separately from recoverability and permission safety. Successful output does not establish a defensible production approval.
Operational Risks
Announced Process Versus Outcome. The official deletion notice is the primary record. It establishes a scheduled deletion and backup path, not how many users completed it or whether restoration succeeded. [S1]
Anonymous Reports, Not Confirmed Incidents. A September post alleges substantial project loss after backup and restoration. An April post alleges deletion during an agent cleanup and insufficient support. Both are anonymous and unverified; the latter was marked moderator-removed in the collected archive. [S7][S8]
Direct retrieval returned HTTP 403 at this cutoff. We omit claimed damages, business names and customer counts. These reports raise questions for vendor response, not proven loss totals, a verified support failure or a finding of misconduct.
Approval should test independent restoration, establish a human escalation owner and constrain write access. Those conditions follow from the confirmed notice and documented research, without requiring belief in the anonymous accounts.
Reputational Risks
The reported acquisition block and separation notice expose a buyer to regulatory and ownership-change scrutiny. They do not establish wrongdoing by Manus. Record the affected service commitments and explain why continuity controls remain adequate. [S1][S2]
Salt is the original researcher and a security vendor with a commercial interest in the risk category. Dark Reading provides secondary coverage of the research, not a second independent technical reproduction. Both the resolved status and this source dependence belong in the file. [S5][S6]
Legal Risks
The practical gap is between owning output and being able to recover it. The contract's export, termination and liability clauses do not create a comprehensive recovery obligation proportionate to a critical business system. [S4]
Before transferring personal data, establish the applicable controller/processor arrangement and execute the required DPA. Before investing or acquiring, verify current ownership and material regulatory obligations. Neither a privacy page nor a planned-unwind headline substitutes for those records. [S2][S3][S4]
Recommendation
Restricted, non-critical use can be defensible with independent backups and limited credentials. Business-critical production use remains blocked until the five conditions below are evidenced in writing and tested where applicable.
Own the Recovery Path
Require a complete export inventory covering code, databases, files, deployment configuration and history. Store backups outside Manus and outside agent write access. Restore a representative project into an independent environment before approving business-critical use. Obtain written recovery-point and recovery-time commitments.
Keep Authority Outside the Agent
Use dedicated integration accounts, read-only permissions and short-lived credentials wherever possible. Keep production secrets and payment-write permissions outside the agent sandbox. Require a named human reviewer for deletion, database writes, deployment and financial actions; test that the gate cannot be bypassed.
Verify the Remediation Boundary
Request the scope and date of the email-injection fix, a regression-test summary and independent evidence covering current connectors, sandbox execution and credential isolation. The resolved proof of concept deserves credit, but it does not establish every current path is protected.
Contract for Separation and Exit
Obtain the applicable DPA, transfer safeguards, training choice and sub-processor record. Agree deletion notice periods, assistance, an export grace period and restoration acceptance before deletion wherever legally possible. Name a continuity owner and require notice of ownership or regulatory changes affecting the service.
Price the Uninsured Loss
Ask legal counsel to review the three-month fee cap, data-loss exclusions and applicable dispute route. Seek negotiated terms proportionate to the records at risk. Cap credit spending and restrict top-ups to an accountable budget owner. Do not substitute subscription credits for compensation or recoverable data.
What Would Move the Verdict to GO. Independently evidenced recovery and credential isolation, regression coverage for current tool paths, and contractual retention and liability protections proportionate to the approved use.
What Would Move the Verdict to NO-GO. Manus as the sole repository for irreplaceable business records, with broad production or financial write access and no independent recovery or enforced human approval.
